MALENKO FRIDAY – 7/15 Match of the Day: Dean Malenko vs Joe Malenko

by on July 15, 2011

What’s better than one Malenko on Malenko Friday? TWO MALENKOS! Today’s Match of the Day delves back to July of 1989, when “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Simply Red dominated the radio airwaves and all the cool kids were going to the movies after their daily arcade visits to watch Lethal Weapon 2. We go to All Japan Pro Wrestling, where Joe Malenko defended his Junior Heavyweight Championship against little brother Dean.

The story doesn’t exactly smack you in the face upon watching it, but everything really makes sense. It’s the story of the little brother trying to one-up his older brother and prove to both himself and his brother that they’re equals. Dean goes hold-for-hold and move-for-move with Joe, but Joe puts Dean in his place at the end. Dean thinks he has Joe after a big slam, but when he gets too fancy, Joe shuts him down and reminds him of the pecking order in the Malenko family. Even if you don’t pay attention to all of that, they do some REALLY pretty-looking mat wrestling in this match and they bust out the bridging leg grapevine, which more guys need to do.
