7/13 Match of the Day: Colt Cabana vs Eugene

by on July 13, 2011

Today’s Match of the Day comes before a time where Colt Cabana would be given shout-outs every Monday night on cable television by CM Punk but his face made occasional appearances on World Wrestling Entertainment television (albeit international television). With rumors abound that Colt might be making an appearance on the Money in the Bank pay-per-view this coming Sunday, we go back to November 11, 2005 as he faces Eugene on Sunday Night Heat.

The lovely thing about this match is that Cabana seemed to “get” how to be an enhancement guy better than the majority of guys they brought/bring in for the role. He made the match completely about Eugene and didn’t do anything whatsoever that could be considered “dynamic”. I don’t know what they want guys to do out there, but it seems like Cabana knew that his time to get over was the two second close-up he got at the beginning of the match when they announced his name, as he took full advantage of it with a ridiculous face he made. Plus, there’s irony in that Cabana always talks about how he wants a career like the Honky Tonk Man, where he gets a memorable gimmick run on television, then works indies until he’s old based on that short run and he’s wrestling arguably a modern equivalent to Honky in Eugene (who had the short, memorable run and half of a decade later is still running strong every weekend based off of it).
