7/12 Match of the Day: CM Punk vs Val Venis

by on July 12, 2011

This Sunday, CM Punk’s billed final match with World Wrestling Entertainment, for the time being, will take place at their Money in the Bank pay-per-view against John Cena. In today’s Match of the Day, we go back to a point where Punk was on the verge of, not leaving, but coming into WWE. He faces Val Venis from the May 9, 2005 edition of Sunday Night Heat.

Val Venis, at the time, was considered the barometer of WWE. If you couldn’t have a good match with Val, you had no shot of getting signed. Fortunately, Punk had a very good match with Val and the rest is history. It is a really good match with the limbwork and the selling and Punk doing a really good job of bumping and feeding for Val. But most importantly: it’s fun to look back at a time when people actually liked Val Venis and when CM Punk wore pretty eyeliner.
