7/5 Match of the Day: Chris Jericho & Eddie Guerrero vs Faces of Fear

by on July 5, 2011

Today’s Match of the Day comes from the February 24, 1997 edition of WCW Monday Nitro, as Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho teamed up to face Meng and the Barbarian, also known as the Faces of Fear.

Guerrero and Jericho often get praised for their short-lived heel team in 1998, but they also deserve credit for how great they were here as the underdog, undersized babyfaces here. In fact, Meng and Barbarian also deserve a ton of credit for their work in this match as well, as they did an excellent job bumping and selling for their smaller opponents (which didn’t happen all that much in WCW in the late-90’s). They told a simple, but awesome story here: the little guys were consistently moving and hitting from all levels, but the second the larger opponents were able to grab them, they were in trouble. But, Jericho and Guerrero had a ton of heart and kept getting up, causing Meng and Barbarian to have to up the impact in every one of their moves (including an awesome double flying headbutt and Meng backdropping Jericho into a powerbomb from Barbarian). The match is so good that even the bullcrap finish ends with a great spot. Really good stuff here, people.
