MALENKO FRIDAY – 7/1 Match of the Day: Dean Malenko & Chris Benoit vs Chris Jericho & Chavo Guerrero, Jr.

by on July 1, 2011

Today’s Match of the Day, as we’re used to doing on Fridays, celebrates MALENKO FRIDAY with charm and style. Today, we go back to the March 14, 1998 edition of WCW Saturday Night, as Dean teamed with regular partner Chris Benoit to face WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho and Chavo Guerrero, Jr.

This is the definition of “great TV match”. They didn’t go out and have a super, duper, mega-mega, Donkey Kong epic, but they still busted their butts, did some neat things and got their point across in under ten minutes. You have Chavo at his physical peak looking like one of the smoothest junior heavyweights in America, you have Chris Jericho at his highest point as a heel in WCW as he’s just a king at his silly schtick and you have two of the top North American super-workers of the 1990’s. Of course, it also points out a major issue in WCW, in that no matter what these guys ended up doing, they would still end up being thrown together since they were all small (Jericho and Malenko had started their feud, but Benoit had moved onto the DDP/Raven three-way feud and Chavo was off working with his uncle Eddie). But still, let’s just enjoy that WCW produced so much television that we got to see matches like this on a regular basis.
