6/21 Match of the Day: Too Much vs Christopher Daniels & Suicide Kid

by on June 21, 2011

Today’s Match of the Day comes from the September 26, 1998 edition of WWF Shotgun Saturday Night (the video says “Superstars” since I believe that’s how Shotgun aired in Australia), as Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor teamed up to face Suicide Kid and “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels.

The WWF pretty much halfway tried a light heavyweight division. They never bothered looking too far south of the border or to Japan (and when they did, the poor guys became mascots and enhancement talent). Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor were arguably the strongest casualties of the late-90’s attempt. They ended up with a semi-push that transformed into the Too Cool phenomenon eventually. But on this night, they faced a couple of guys who seemed to be constantly on the WWF’s radar due to their association with promoter/agent Rick Bassman’s Ultimate Pro Wrestling: Christopher Daniels and the Suicide Kid. Kid fell off the radar, while Daniels went on to become one of the bigger stars of the past decade to not ever be under WWF/E contract. This wasn’t the most spectacular match (especially compared to how insane the WCW cruiserweight division was), but it’s interesting to look back and see both what the WWF was looking for in light heavyweights and what indie guys thought the WWF wanted.
