MALENKO FRIDAY – 5/27 Match of the Day: Dean Malenko vs Curt Hennig

by on May 27, 2011

It’s Malenko Friday! Memorial Day is on its way, so what better way to start your mega-sized weekend than with a bit of Deano Machino lovin’!

Today’s Match of the Day comes from the September 7, 1998 episode of WCW Monday Nitro. The nWo Black and White were being challenged by all comers, whether it be WCW renegades or the nWo Wolfpac. But, one new/old group was slowly reuniting to challenge the group: The Four Horsemen. For weeks, Dean Malenko had been begging Arn Anderson to reunite the Horsemen and was repeatedly turned down. Around this time, Dean got more involved in the war against nWo Hollywood as it came out that nWo B&W leader Eric Bischoff was blocking the Horsemen’s leader (Ric Flair) and his re-entry into WCW after a heated legal battle in real life.

That’s where this match comes in. Six days before WCW’s annual two-ring, two-cage War Games match, Dean Malenko went to battle with nWo Hollywood member Curt Hennig inside of the cage. Malenko got to show off his fire (which is a completely different type of fire than your usual fist-pumping, out of control fire that a lot of wrestling’s heroes go into when fighting from underneath) and Hennig’s work on Malenko’s arm was impressive. Plus, in my opinion, this is one of the most impressive bumping jobs that Hennig would perform after he bloated up in size in WCW and his back injuries really got to him. The finish is kind of iffy, but it leads to an AWESOME Arn Anderson run-in.
