5/20 Match of the Day: “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

by on May 20, 2011

In honor of the memory of one of the most beloved and talented individuals to ever grace the squared circle, we put Brian Pillman Week and Malenko Friday on hold. “Macho Man” Randy Savage was an INCREDIBLE performer and one of the most unique characters in the history of professional wrestling. With a lot of wrestling personas, you could categorize them with, at most, one adjective and one noun (I.E.: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was a rebellious redneck). You couldn’t really do that with Savage and possibly give him an ounce of justice. It’s been said that, “If everyone can imitate you, you’ve made it”. The Randy Savage cadence and gravely voice is so distinctive that it’s hard to not meet a wrestling fan who’s not at least tried it.

In honor of the memory of Savage, we present his match with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat from the February 15, 1987 WWF live event in Toronto, ONT, Canada. They did the match around the loop to prepare for their legendary Wrestlemania III (to the point that Steamboat’s told the story about how Savage literally labelled each spot in the match by a letter and they’d quiz each other before and after shows with a letter, to which the other would be able to recite what sequence of maneuvers it represented). It’s a bit slower-paced than the Wrestlemania match, but I’d be darned if it isn’t almost as good, if not on the level of the more-ballyhooed Wrestlemania bout.

Rest in peace, Randy. You were one of a kind and a lot of people love(d) you for it.
