MALENKO FRIDAY – 4/14 Match of the Day: Dean Malenko vs Sting

by on April 15, 2011

Today’s special MALENKO FRIDAY Match of the Day comes from the November 13, 1995 edition of WCW Monday Nitro, as Dean faces WCW fan favorite Sting. What I love about this match is how much respect Sting gives Malenko. For most of the bodybuilder muscleheads who came through wrestling, they came in without much respect for anyone and almost all of them had issues working with smaller guys or guys with lesser bodies since the perception of the time was “Big muscles = tough”.

With Sting, he seemed to respect guys who could go hold-for-hold-for-counterhold with anyone. He had fantastic chemistry with Steven/William Regal, who (while a decent-sized man) never had the best body. He would work Regal’s style of match and hang with every single European-style hold, counterhold, pin cradle and sequence. He did the exact same here: he worked a Malenko-style bout where Dean worked over Sting’s leg with holds on the mat. Sting sold it incredibly well, gave Malenko credibility, and shockingly even bumped for a German suplex from the much-smaller Malenko (which a LOT of heavyweights then would refuse to do). The finish even put Malenko over, where Sting couldn’t get him with his hold like he did everywhere else, so he had to rely on a flash cradle. This is a great example of a top guy doing what he can to put a midcard wrestler over without doing the job.
