MALENKO FRIDAY 4/1 Match of the Day: Dean Malenko vs Hector Guerrero

by on April 1, 2011

So, in  my humble opinion, Dean Malenko is ridiculously underplayed by hardcore fans.

Ridiculous statement, eh? But, think about it: the dudes that he really made his name with, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero, became larger than life for reasons both fortunate and unfortunate, after Dean had to retire in 2001. The other halves of Dean’s most famous feuds in America, Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio, Jr., are worldwide megastars now (Chris Jericho’s on ABC every Monday night in front of millions of people, for crying out loud!). People seem to even bring up Perry Saturn more in modern days due to the silliness he’s gotten himself in through.

Therefore, I’m starting a tradition for Match of the Day: MALENKO FRIDAYS! Every Friday, starting last Friday, we’ll be featuring Dean Malenko bouts on Match of the Day so that, hopefully, we can do our little part to make sure people remember good ol’ Deano Machino.

Today’s Match of the Day comes from the June 8th edition of WCW Worldwide, as Dean faced not only the older brother of one of his top rivals, but a guy who had a super-underrated run in WCW in 1997: Hector Guerrero. Hector had this great, short run where, if it were 2008-2009 WWE, he’d end up on the ECW brand in the Finlay role, teaching the Jack Swaggers and Ezekiel Jacksons of the world how to work. He seemed incredibly motivated and was in good enough shape that he could work the modern junior heavyweight style with ease.

This match consisted of some great mat wrestling, where Hector kept with Dean every step of the way. They worked really hard compared to most guys on the Orlando WCW tapings, especially considering some of the stories that have come out from that era, where guys would supposedly stay awake the entire week and indulge vices the entire time they were there. But, back to the match…right before the finish, Malenko hits this SICK side slam/head drop dealie that will make you cringe. It’s fierce.

The match can be seen under the cut!
